Information on Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE)

Ensure you have access to FIRE before you need it

If you plan to submit files through the Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) system, now is a good time to ensure you can access the system before the February 28 and March 31 filing deadlines.

An exciting new feature has been added to the FIRE Production and Test systems!
When you log into your FIRE account for the first time this year, you will be prompted to create a secret phrase to use when resetting your password.

  • If you already have an account on FIRE Systems (Production and Test), you will be required to establish a secret phrase the first time that you log into the system.
  • If you are establishing a FIRE System account for the first time, the system will prompt you to create the secret phrase in addition to User ID, Password, and PIN.
  • Resetting your Password – If you have a FIRE System account (Production and Test) with an established secret phrase and forgot your password, you may reset your password by using your established secret phrase.

Reminder:  A valid username, password, PIN, and secret phrase are required for a successful login.

If you encounter difficulties logging in, the first thing you should do is to ensure you’ve entered your information correctly. If you get locked out of your FIRE account, you will need to call the Information Returns Customer Service at 866-455-7438 (International toll call at 304-263-8700) for assistance resetting your password, PIN, or secret phrase. Before calling, have your business name, EIN and user ID handy.

It’s important to verify that you can access FIRE now to avoid longer than normal wait times if you call close to the filing deadline. You can find more information on FIRE landing page on IRS.gov
